Target Audience

Personnel who handle, operate, or work in proximity to ionizing radiation sources, radioactive materials, or radiation-emitting devices under the supervision of a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO), and require Category A licensing.

Course Objectives

  • Equip radiation workers with essential knowledge of ionizing radiation.
  • Develop awareness of legal responsibilities under Law No. 7 of 2022.
  • Provide practical training in radiation protection, monitoring, and emergency response.
  • Prepare workers for safe, compliant practices when working with radiation.

Course Structure

Module 1: Introduction to Ionizing Radiation (2 hours)

  • What is ionizing radiation?
  • Natural vs. artificial sources
  • Types of radiation: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Neutrons, X-rays
  • Units of measurement: Bq, Gy, Sv, mSv/h

 

Module 2: Overview of National Legal Framework (3 hours)

  • Introduction to Law No. 7 of 2022 – focus on:
    • Article 50 – Licensing of radioactive material use
    • Article 52 – Worker responsibilities and site safety
    • Article 53.2 – Dose limits for workers
    • Article 55 – Requirement for competent personnel
    • Article 57 – Reporting radiation incidents and exposures
    • Article 61 – Environmental limits
  • Role of the Supreme Council for the Environment

Module 3: Biological Effects of Radiation (2 hours)

  • • How radiation affects the body
    • Deterministic and stochastic effects
    • Tissue sensitivity
    • Exposure to pregnant women

Module 4: Radiation Protection Principles (4 hours)

  • Time, distance, shielding
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Use of radiation signs and labeling
  • Area zoning and access control

Module 5: Workplace Responsibilities and Safe Work Practices (4 hours)

  • Responsibilities of a radiation worker
  • Operating procedures and SOPs
  • Handling radioactive materials safely
  • Housekeeping and contamination prevention
  • Dose limits and how they are managed

Module 6: Radiation Monitoring and Dosimetry (3 hours)

  • Types of radiation monitoring devices
    • Survey meters
    • Area monitors
    • Personal dosimeters (TLDs, electronic)
  • How to read and maintain dosimetry
  • Recordkeeping and reporting exposure (Article 56)

Module 7: Waste Handling and Storage Awareness (2 hours)

  • Types of radioactive waste
  • Temporary storage practices
  • Return of sealed sources (Article 60)
  • Basic labeling and segregation

Module 8: Emergency Response and Incident Reporting (3 hours)

  • What to do in case of:
    • Radiation spill
    • Fire involving radioactive material
    • Suspected overexposure
  • Internal and external notification procedures (Article 57)
  • Emergency drills and personal decontamination

Module 9: Review and Final Assessment (1 hour)

  • Knowledge check
  • Multiple-choice exam (20–25 questions)
  • Practical Q&A session

  • Written test covering all modules
  • Course completion certificate issued upon successful completion
  • Required for applying for Category A worker license as per Article 50
