Preparation for licensing Radiation workers – Category B
Target Audience
Support personnel and technicians who work occasionally or under supervision with low- to moderate-risk radiation sources (e.g., diagnostic X-rays, sealed sources in gauges), and are required to obtain Category B radiation worker licensing from Bahrain’s Supreme Council for the Environment.

Course Objectives
- Raise awareness of basic radiation protection concepts.
- Clarify responsibilities of Category B radiation workers under Law No. 7 of 2022.
- Promote safe work habits around radiation-emitting devices.
- Ensure legal compliance and eligibility for worker licensing.
Course Structure
Module 1: Introduction to Ionizing Radiation (1 hour)• What is ionizing radiation?
- Common sources in medical, industrial, and research settings
- Units of measurement (Bq, Sv, mSv/h)
- Basic types: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, X-ray
Module 2: Legal Framework and Worker Responsibilities (1 hour)
- Key provisions of Law No. 7 of 2022:
- Article 50 – License requirement for radioactive source use
- Article 52 – Responsibility for site safety
- Article 53.2 – Dose limits for workers
- Article 55 – Requirement for competent personnel
- Article 57 – Incident and exposure reporting
- The role of the Supreme Council for the Environment
Module 3: Health Effects of Radiation Exposure (1 hour)
- Overview of biological effects
- Acute vs. chronic effects
- Sensitivity of organs and tissues
- Occupational dose limits for Category B workers
Module 4: Safe Work Practices and ALARA (2 hours)
- Time, distance, shielding
- Importance of signage and warning labels
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Following local rules and procedures
Module 5: Monitoring and Dosimetry (1 hour)
- Use of personal dosimeters (TLDs, film badges, electronic)
- Importance of routine dose monitoring
- Reading and reporting your dose record
Module 6: Emergency Situations and Incident Reporting (1 hour)
- What to do in case of a spill or exposure
- Basic first actions and notification chain
- Reporting overexposures or near misses (Article 57)

Module 7: Basic Waste and Source Handling (1 hour)
- Overview of radioactive source storage
- Avoiding contamination
